Xtreme Gardening Azos – Beneficial Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria for Roots & Transplants

Xtreme Gardening Azos is a wettable-powder beneficial bacteria root inoculant containing Azospirillum brasilense. Designed for propagation, transplanting and vegetative growth, Azos fixes atmospheric nitrogen and converts it into a form that can be utilised by plants.

Applied directly around the root zone, Azos helps establish a biologically active root environment during important early stages of plant development. It is suitable for use with cuttings, transplants, containers, raised beds and a wide range of growing media.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Nitrogen-fixing bacteria: contains the beneficial diazotrophic bacterium Azospirillum brasilense.
  • Supports root establishment: particularly useful during propagation and transplanting.
  • Suitable for vegetative growth: can be applied around the root zone throughout vegetative development.
  • Wettable powder formulation: suitable for direct root-zone application or mixing with water as directed.
  • Versatile growing-media compatibility: suitable for a wide range of horticultural growing media.
  • Fertiliser compatible: the manufacturer states that Azos can be used alongside synthetic and natural fertilisers.
  • Broad horticultural use: suitable for vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers and ornamental plants.

How Xtreme Gardening Azos Works

Azos contains Azospirillum brasilense, a beneficial diazotrophic bacterium capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen. This biological process converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form that becomes available within the plant-root environment.

Because Azos is intended to work around developing roots, it is particularly suited to propagation, transplanting and vegetative stages where strong root establishment is important.

How to Use Xtreme Gardening Azos

Rooting Cuttings

For rooting cuttings, the manufacturer recommends mixing 4 tablespoons per 3.8 litres (1 US gallon) of water and soaking growing plugs or rockwool cubes for approximately 10 minutes.

For dipping cuttings, mix 1 part Azos with 2 parts water, dip the tips of the cuttings for approximately 15 seconds and then place them into the rooting media. The manufacturer recommends adjusting the water to approximately pH 6.0 before mixing when using this method.

Propagation Machines

Adjust the water to approximately pH 6.0 before adding 1 tablespoon of Azos per 3.8 litres (1 US gallon) of water.

Transplanting

Apply Azos directly into the planting hole, around the roots or over the root ball before planting, backfilling and watering.

Container Size Recommended Amount
3.8–11.4 L (1–3 US gal) 1 tablespoon
18.9–26.5 L (5–7 US gal) 2 tablespoons
37.9–75.7 L (10–20 US gal) 3 tablespoons
94.6–189.3 L (25–50 US gal) 4 tablespoons
378.5 L (100 US gal) 1/2 cup

Raised Beds & In-Ground Planting

Apply 1 tablespoon per planting hole, positioning the product around the root zone.

Watering & Reservoir Application

Azos can also be mixed with water for root-zone application during vegetative growth. The manufacturer's powder application rates are:

Water Volume Azos
18.9 L (5 US gal) 2 tablespoons
94.6 L (25 US gal) 3–4 tablespoons
189.3 L (50 US gal) 6–8 tablespoons
378.5 L (100 US gal) 3/4–1 cup

Using Azos with Xtreme Gardening Mykos

Azos and Xtreme Gardening Mykos perform different biological roles and can form part of the same root-zone programme. Azos supplies beneficial nitrogen-fixing bacteria, while Mykos is a mycorrhizal inoculant. Xtreme Gardening specifically recommends using Mykos when transplanting.

Important Information

  • Follow the manufacturer's application instructions for the specific growing method.
  • Prepare mixed solutions for use rather than prolonged storage.
  • Maintain appropriate environmental and root-zone conditions for beneficial microorganisms.
  • Application rates can vary considerably depending on propagation, transplanting or established-plant use.
