Athena Cleanse – Hypochlorous Acid Irrigation System Cleaner

Athena Cleanse is a low-TDS water conditioner formulated with hypochlorous acid (HOCl) to help control mineral build-up and scale within irrigation systems, reservoirs, growing media and hydroponic equipment.

Designed for regular system maintenance, Cleanse helps break down accumulated mineral deposits and other residual material that can collect inside irrigation lines and equipment over time. Its very low TDS means it can be incorporated into a nutrient programme without significantly altering the mineral balance of the solution.

Athena Cleanse is particularly useful in recirculating hydroponic, RDWC and DWC systems, as well as drip irrigation and fertigation systems where mineral residue and scale can restrict water flow and contribute to blocked irrigation components.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Hypochlorous acid formula – formulated from HOCl derived from salt through an electrochemical process.
  • Reduces mineral build-up – helps break down scale and accumulated mineral residue within irrigation systems.
  • Supports cleaner irrigation lines – regular use helps maintain lines, reservoirs and irrigation equipment.
  • Very low TDS – designed to minimise its effect on the mineral balance of the nutrient solution.
  • Suitable for regular maintenance – can be incorporated into an ongoing irrigation-system maintenance programme.
  • Suitable for recirculating systems – useful in RDWC, DWC and other recirculating hydroponic applications.
  • Suitable for system flushing – higher application rates can be used to address more significant mineral accumulation.
  • Clear liquid formula – easy to incorporate into irrigation and fertigation systems.

How Athena Cleanse Works

Minerals with lower solubility can accumulate within irrigation systems, reservoirs, growing media, drippers and pipework. Over time, these deposits can contribute to scale and restrict the efficient operation of irrigation equipment.

Athena Cleanse uses a hypochlorous acid solution to help break down mineral scale and residual material. Regular application can help keep irrigation systems cleaner and reduce the accumulation that can contribute to blocked lines and drippers.

Application & Dilution Rates

Regular system maintenance: Use 2–5 mL per US gallon of water, equivalent to approximately 0.5–1.3 mL per litre.

Severe mineral build-up: Increase the application rate to 5–10 mL per US gallon, equivalent to approximately 1.3–2.6 mL per litre.

Application requirements can vary according to water quality, irrigation system design and the level of mineral accumulation. Refer to the current Athena feed schedule and product guidance when incorporating Cleanse into an Athena feeding programme.

RDWC, DWC & Recirculating Hydroponic Systems

Athena Cleanse is suitable for recirculating hydroponic systems where nutrient solution repeatedly passes through reservoirs, pipework and irrigation equipment. Regular use helps reduce mineral residue and scale that can accumulate within these systems.

Its low-TDS formulation makes Cleanse particularly useful where maintaining precise control over the mineral concentration of the nutrient solution is important.

Irrigation System Maintenance

Regular use of Athena Cleanse can help reduce mineral deposits within irrigation lines, drippers, reservoirs and related equipment. Keeping irrigation components free from excessive scale can help maintain consistent water flow and reduce maintenance requirements.

Best Practice

  • Measure Athena Cleanse accurately according to the intended application.
  • Use clean measuring equipment to prevent contamination of the original container.
  • Use the regular maintenance rate where Cleanse forms part of an ongoing irrigation programme.
  • Increase to the appropriate higher rate where significant mineral build-up or scale is present.
  • Monitor irrigation lines, drippers, reservoirs and filters regularly for signs of mineral accumulation.
  • Follow the current Athena feed schedule when Cleanse is used alongside an Athena nutrient programme.
  • Always follow the product label and current manufacturer instructions.
